How long to keep your car running after a dead battery?

We recommend letting your car run for 30 minutes after it has received a jump start. If you drive the car around, rather than just letting it idle, you will create a more reliable charge. Some folks rev the engine which charged the battery faster than if just left idle.

Why did your car battery die?

Having a car battery that won't hold a charge can be frustrating, but with a little effort you can figure out why. And while jump starts can get you out of a bind, we also recommend that you investigate the reason that your car battery isn't doing the trick.

Here are the top 8 reasons your car battery dies:

  • Human Error - Did you leave the lights on or the key turned in the ignition to use the battery?
  • Parasitic Drain - Though there are several things using the battery at all times (like a security alarm), it shouldn't drain the battery. Check to see if there's an electrical problem.
  • Charging Problems - Faulty charging can be due to the alternator having loose belts or worn-out tensioners, keeping it from working right.
  • Alternator Not Working - Your car's alternator works to recharge the battery. Sometimes, if it has a bad diode, your car will charge even if the engine is shut off, therefore, draining your battery.
  • Temperature Extremes - Believe it or not, a car battery can freeze and overheat if left in extreme temperatures.
  • Excessive Short Drives - Short drives create wear on the battery (start/stop) more than consecutive long drives.
  • Battery Cables Loose or Damaged -  If connections in your battery have corroded, the car cannot recharge while driving. Check connections for signs of corrosion or dirt. If a battery cable is loose, it won't be able to create a complete electrical current and your car won't start.
  • Battery is Old - Hate to point out the obvious, but how old is your battery. You can have your battery power checked by a professional, and they can recommend if you need a new battery.
